Mustangs’ Take on Disney+

November 22, 2019

Just last week, The Walt Disney Company released their new streaming service, Disney+, with a total of 10 million accounts made on the day of the launch.

Disney+ is an on-demand, ad-free streaming service that is currently only available in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands. With a subscription fee of about $7/month and $70/year (after a seven-day free trial), Disney+ is a foreseen rival of popular streaming services such as Netflix, which costs $9/month for the least costliest plan.

The new streaming service is filled with Disney classics, going as far back as 1937. Viewers can expect to see movies such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio, as well as TV shows such as The Suite Life of Zach & Cody and Wizards of Waverly Place. Additionally, the subscription service features movies and/or TV shows from Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. While Disney+ contains released movies and TV shows, Disney has also launched and is planning to launch its own shows and movies, such as a reboot of the High School Musical franchise, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and The Mandalorian.

Students at the Ranch share what they think about Disney+:

Do you have Disney+? If you don’t, why not?

“I do not have Disney Plus,” sophomore Rehma Akhund says. “I do not have it partly because I did not know it existed until a few days ago. The main reason why I actually don’t have it is because I feel like I’ll use it for a little while and then I won’t after a time being. I like the concept of it though, with Disney and so many other things in one place… but… the thing is, I don’t get the time to watch TV even now and even when I do it’s only for a small period of time.”

Why are you excited about having Disney+?

“Disney was literally my childhood!,” junior Jasmine Flores says. “When I was little, I would put on the movies and watch them over and over again. Each week I would have a new movie that I was obsessed with. I’ve practically memorized the movies word for word. So for me to be able to have Disney+ is so awesome because I can watch as many movies as I want, whenever I want and never get tired of it.”

Why do you want/not want Disney+?

“I would say that I want Disney Plus because it preserves classics and incorporates many other stories which creates a variety of stories to explore,” sophomore Rehma Akhund says. “The variety of stories would not only make former Disney fanatics satisfied, but other people satisfied too as it incorporates many different TV shows and movies. This brings me back to what I was saying earlier; I would like to get it because there’s something for everyone, ranging from Disney to Marvel to Pixar.”

Why don’t you have Disney+?

“I had it for one day; I used my friend’s account, because you can’t find them on regular TV and all the old childhood movies and TV shows are on there,” sophomore Jasmine Bass says. “I don’t have my own account, because 6 dollars is too much money for me.”
