Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Announce a “Break”
January 10, 2020
On Wednesday, January 8th, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they would be taking a break within the royal family. They announced that they intended to “step back” from Buckingham Palace and divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America; they will even start paying their own bills.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they said in a statement.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” the couple said.
They do intend to have a part-time home in North America, however, this will not be a complete break. They simply are stepping back in their roles as senior members of the Royal family.
Meghan Markle has already left for Canada, where she lived for seven years, days after she and Prince Harry announced the news. NBC News confirms that Harry has decided to stay in the UK.
