Cypress Ranch High School is home to students of diverse cultures and backgrounds, and with Hispanic Heritage Month coming to a close, many teachers and Mustangs have come together to celebrate the beautiful, vibrant culture, histories and contributions of the Hispanic community.
In cosmetology class, students had the opportunity to come together and bring in a bunch of different Hispanic-based cuisine options to hold a celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month.
“I really enjoyed it,” sophomore Andjenea Vaxter said. “I love seeing the different cultures coming together, and everybody can celebrate it together and this helps everyone understand each culture better.”
In English II, teachers have incorporated daily lessons highlighting a different Hispanic author each day, introducing students to new books while fostering a deeper appreciation for Hispanic culture in the process.
“Literature is about reflection, seeing yourself in the stories you read,” English II teacher Ms. Wood said. “That’s why it’s important to highlight diverse authors, especially those whose books might be right in our classrooms. Their stories can help students feel seen and understood, especially during the confusing teenage years. By celebrating these voices, we can show people from all backgrounds that they, too, have authors in their culture doing amazing things—and they can too.”
Overall, Hispanic Heritage Month has brought a deeper appreciation for the Hispanic community within the school. It has helped many students feel seen and valued, while also fostering understanding among others about the culture and contributions of the Hispanic community.
“I love Hispanic Heritage Month. It is so significant because it’s important to show appreciation for what the Hispanic community has contributed to this nation,” sophomore Jamilette Ntugu-Chicas said. “Hearing about the hardships my mom faced growing up to secure a better life in America has made me deeply grateful for the life I now enjoy because of her. I want to make her proud. So having a month dedicated to commemorating her community and the challenges they’ve overcome is something truly meaningful.”
