In a heartwarming effort to support military personnel stationed around the world, the school’s Mustangs for the Military club is leading a campaign to collect candy, which will be included in care packages sent to service members in various locations including Afghanistan, Japan and Germany.
The club’s mission is to brighten the lives of soldiers who are far from home during the holiday season. Through this effort, the students aim to not only provide comfort through treats but also to remind the troops that they are appreciated and supported.
“We’re trying to make them feel like they’re not forgotten,” teacher and club sponsor Christa Alcala said. “A simple gesture like candy can make a big difference, especially when they’re away from their families during the holidays.”
A Sweet Tradition
The club has been collecting and sending candy for two years now. Their effort is particularly significant as they prepare for their upcoming shipment at the end of the week, which will include Christmas cards and candy.
“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from the soldiers about the candy,” Alcala said. “A couple of years ago, we started including Halloween candy, and it turned out to be their favorite shipment. They really appreciate the small things like mini chocolates that they can’t get in places like Afghanistan or Japan.”
According to Alcala, the response from the military unit has been overwhelmingly positive. “They say it’s heartwarming to get these care packages. It’s not just the candy, but it’s knowing that people are thinking of them.”
The club’s care packages are not limited to candy. They also include hygiene products, snacks and entertainment items like card games and puzzles to help soldiers pass the time. These items are selected based on feedback from past shipments, ensuring that each package includes items that the troops truly need and enjoy.
“We focus on things that are practical and comforting,” Alcala said. “Protein bars, baby wipes, games like Sudoku, and of course, hygiene products are essential. We also make sure to include batteries and other small items that can make life easier.”
A Way To Give Back and Get Involved
The club also organizes fundraisers to raise money by holding an annual event, the Puzzle Competition. Held every year at the end of March, this event allows teams of four to compete for prizes while raising money.
The candy collection drive will continue through early December, with students encouraged to bring their donations during the school’s designated collection times.
“We spread knowledge of our club by putting signs around the school and having members spread the word,” senior Vanessa Patino said.
As the holiday season approaches, the Mustangs for the Military club reminds us all that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a large impact. For the students at Cypress Ranch High School, the effort to support those serving in the military is a reminder that compassion and community can make a world of a difference– one piece of candy at a time.
