Ngoc Dinh’s (10th grade) ice skating tradition
As the chill of the winter season settles over Houston, sophomore Ngoc Dinh’s wondrous family tradition will take place where the glow of twinkling lights meets the exhilaration of ice skating. Each year Dinh’s family rents out the Galleria Mall’s skating rink, transforming it into their own, private experience.
Dinh’s family tradition began with her uncle who generously rents out the mall’s rink for two hours each year.
“We have the whole rink to ourselves,” Dinh said. “We can play whatever music we like.”
Dinh goes on to say how they rent out the rink when it is late and all the Galleria store lights are out except the illuminating rink lights. This creates a magical atmosphere, where the soft glow of the rink lights contrast beautifully with the darkness, making it feel like a secret place for only them.
“It creates a very movie-like experience,” Dinh said. “I feel like I’m the main character.”
The annual gathering not only allows for Dinh to indulge in her love for ice skating but also to reconnect with her 60 family members. She notes that this tradition allows for her and her family to reconnect after not having seen each other for some time.
Dinh also shares that this tradition has changed her perspective on the holidays by highlighting the importance of spending time with family and creating long-lasting memories that she plans on continuing in the future with her own children.
Elias Serrano (11th grade) Christmas Eve
The spirit of Christmas comes to life when junior Elias Serrano’s family gathers together to celebrate the birth of Jesus with food, laughter and cherished traditions.
Serrano’s house is filled with different aromas ranging from sweet pastries to savory meats. His family together makes traditional tamales where they each contribute to a part of the process.
“We start cooking early in the day,” Serrano said. “It takes a lot of patience working with so many people, but it is definitely worth it.”
Their kitchen becomes filled with lots of activity from the sound of the chattering family hard at work together. The tamales, a symbol of their unity and heritage, are made with love and care, making them even more special.
Another beloved tradition Serrano shares is the creative and elaborate game his grandparents come up with each year. The game results in prizes for all the grandchildren, adding an element of excitement and friendly competition to the festivities.
“I get very competitive with my cousins,” Serrano said. “It’s fun to see my grandparents getting so excited for us to play.”
The game not only brings joy to the grandchildren but also to grandparents who delight in seeing the family come together in such a lively and engaging way.
As midnight approaches for the Serrano family, they gather around the tree and join hands in prayer. The joy of the season shines through his family as they share stories and fond memories. This moment of affection and gratitude is a true reminder of the true meaning of this season.
