Last night (Dec. 7), the varsity boys basketball team toppled Bridgeland in the Bears’ own gym in a hard-fought rivalry match that went down to the wire.
Ranch came away with the 53-47 victory that took every ounce of fight left in the Mustangs. The Mustangs showed good defense in the first, choosing to trap Bridgeland’s offense early in the game. This in turn opened up room for scoring with senior guard Donovan Brown scoring a quick 8 points on his own. Even though Ranch led at the end of the first half, it did not come without its troubles.
The Mustangs found their lead slipping due to opposing guard Trae Busby with Coach Mason Huffmeister pointing out that “[Busby was] definitely getting to the paint, we didn’t rotate very well…and we know that that’s what he’s very good at.”
All of these points allowed Bridgeland to tie the game with a minute left of the half. Despite the struggles, Huffmeister said he felt the team stayed true to their original gameplan in “[doing] a really good job on the glass and [making] some timely shots.”
Starting guard Tyler Scheetz led the team in rebounds with 9 boards for the night. Cypress Ranch is now turning its attention to Langham Creek, looking to extend a three-game win streak as they take on the Lobos at home on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
