On Jan. 14, the Mustangs varsity boys basketball team dominated the Cy Springs Panthers in a heated match, walking off with a massive 71-43 victory. This intense clash between the two schools had the bleachers full and the crowd roaring as the night went on.
It was a great defensive game for the Mustangs, seeing tons of energy on the defensive end, coach Mason Huffmeister said.
“We really bought into the game plan, [and] we defended the paint extremely well,” Huffmeister said.
Cy Ranch completely shut down Springs’ scoring, anticipating passing lanes and keeping them out on the perimeter. This perfect storm of tough defense allowed the Mustangs to go on a 17-5 run in the second quarter.
Despite Cy Springs’ size advantage, the Mustangs applied pressure and cut off all of the Panther’s main scorers. On the other hand, Cy Ranch had some highlight plays for the night seeing blocks from both Forward KJ Goodwin and Center R’Monie Edwards. Starting guard Tyler Scheetz showed the most hustle on the team giving a defensive masterclass and recording 7 steals on the night.
The Mustangs are now 16-10 overall and hold the best record in their district at 5-1. Cypress Ranch will face the Cypress Park Tigers, who are second in district games, Jan. 17 on the road at 7 p.m.
