In the varsity girls basketball playoff game, Cy Ranch High School won against Klein Oak High School with a tight score of 52-42. The close score throughout the game had the fans on the edge of their seats as the two schools fought to secure a win.
Cy Ranch’s tough defense and timely scoring at the end of the game helped them pull through and bring the game to a close. The girls stepped up, making good plays when it really counted. When it comes to playoffs, as varsity is a small team with only nine players, they had to pull up around five more players from the JV team to help them through playoffs.
“We all know that we all need to practice hard because now it is win or go home, while our previous year we had fallen short by one game to be able to go to the playoffs, which has pushed us to go even harder this year,” senior Averie Steele said.
Steele said she feels as if when it comes to the game there is no such thing as a perfect game, just like there is no perfect player. According to Steele, she can say that they have had many great games.
“If there was one thing that I wish I could change it would be to keep everyone out of their own head when they do make mistakes because once again no one is truly perfect everyone makes mistakes,” Steele said.
The most memorable moment of the playoffs for Steele is when the team got back to the locker room after they won against Klein Oak, and they all grabbed a water bottle and snuck up on the coaches. They proceeded to spray cold water on them while they were wearing fancy clothes.
”I felt at that moment everyone really was happy for the win, even if some did not get in the game we all were celebrating as a team,” Steele said.
She believes that her personal performance during the playoffs was good and helpful to team, especially when it came to leadership. Steele has also been nominated for Dave Campbell’s basketball player of the week award presented by Chicken Express.
”I think I played the way I did because I feel as if after last year, when during the game we needed to make it to playoffs, I got injured and I was unable to help my team be successful,” she said. “I wanted to make sure this year I made my presence very known on the court to show my team that I am here to have their backs when they need it most.”
As for junior Essence Wilson, if she could change one thing about the game, it would be blowing them out by more points because of their alleged missed opportunities to score.
“The most memorable moment from playoffs was the energy in the gym of us cheering whenever someone from our team scored,” Wilson said. “We’ve been doing a lot of scrimmaging and shooting drills, well really the same practice we’ve been doing all year just more intense,” junior Anaiah White said.
She said the constant practice definitely helped the team to prepare for the intensity faced in the game.
“I’m grateful for the win with my team. The celebration after the game meant a lot to me since we didn’t make the playoffs last year. It was a really happy moment for us,” White said.
White assures that she always tries to do her best in every game, in order to help her team and hopefully earn a win, which in this extraordinary case, they did.
The girls basketball team takes on Nimitz Feb. 13 at Cypress Woods High School.
