On Feb. 8, Cy-Fair ISD crowned the Cypress Springs Panthers as district varsity boys basketball champions in an electric rematch 39-34 between the Cypress Ranch Mustangs and Cypress Springs High School. With the regular season coming to an end, Cy-Fair ISD is full of tension concerning the playoffs. These two rivals were no exception and have battled all season for control of the No. 1 seed.
In the first half, Ranch walked out looking like a completely different team than they had previously; they seemed uncoordinated on the defensive end, often lost track of the ball and looked sluggish getting back in transition. Meanwhile, Cy Springs’ size and defensive toughness shut down the Mustangs’ offense almost completely, allowing Ranch only 6 points in the first half.
Coach Mason Huffmeister was not going down without a fight, attuning the team to target Springs’ defense and bringing the Mustangs back into this game.
When asked about the 28-19 run Cy Ranch went on in the second half, Coach Mason Huffmeister said, “We’ve fought back from deficits from that big before and won games…we just missed a couple shots we needed to hit.”
Although the Mustangs played amazing basketball and tied the game in the fourth quarter, it just was not enough to recover from their first-half deficit.
Cypress Ranch faced the Cypress Park Tigers for the last game of the season on Feb. 12.
