As the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo continues its month-long run at NRG Park, students at Cypress Ranch High School are making plans to attend and enjoy the wide variety of attractions the annual event has to offer.
The rodeo, which began in 1932, is the world’s largest livestock exhibition and rodeo, drawing millions of visitors each year. In addition to rodeo competitions featuring bull riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling, the event also includes concerts, a carnival and livestock shows.
For many students, the carnival is one of the biggest highlights.
“I’m excited for the carnival games,” junior Amiya Johnson said. “I’m planning to go with my boyfriend and my friends during spring break.”
The Houston Rodeo’s carnival features more than 80 rides and dozens of games, offering everything from towering roller coasters to classic fairground attractions. Food is also a major draw, with vendors serving deep-fried treats, smoked barbecue and unique creations like bacon-wrapped turkey legs and fried Oreos.
Junior Billy Pradia said he is looking forward to experiencing the variety of food options with his family.
“I am looking forward to the carnival and trying different foods they have with my family,” Pradia said.
Live entertainment is another major attraction at the rodeo, with big-name artists performing each night in NRG Stadium. This year’s lineup includes country stars like Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton, as well as pop and Latin artists such as Jonas Brothers and Los Tigres del Norte.
Junior Hannah Alfred said she is eager to enjoy the atmosphere with her friends.
“I’m looking forward to having fun with my friends and hanging out and watching shows,” Alfred said.
The Houston Rodeo runs through March 17, giving Cypress Ranch students plenty of opportunities to experience the event’s entertainment, food, and festivities. Whether they’re cheering on rodeo competitors, enjoying carnival rides or trying new foods, many students see the rodeo as a can’t-miss tradition that brings friends and family together each year.
