Football Advances to Regional Finals

The University of Houston’s TDECU stadium traded its own red and silver for a sea of blue and gold this past Friday, Nov. 29 as the varsity football team sailed to a victory against Galena Park North Shore with a score of 31-27 in the Divison I Region III-6A semifinal playoff game.

Cy Ranch will face Dickinson on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the University of Houston.

This win marks Cy Ranch as the only CFISD team still standing in the regional bracket: Cy Woods lost to Manvel High School and Cy-Fair fell to Dickinson. This is only the second time that Cy Ranch has made it to regional finals in its six-year varsity run.

“We’re very fortunate and very happy to be here and feel like it’s a neat deal that we’ve been able to do it two times in the last three years now,” coach Gene Johnson said.

This is only the latest in a long list of victories, following a string of 10 consecutive wins.

“We’re excited because it’s our longest winning streak in the history of the school,” Johnson said. “That’s a neat deal, when you can do something that hasn’t been done.”

The victories can be attributed most to the players, Johnson said, who have been improving with each game.

“I’m proud of the kids for hanging in there,” Johnson said.
