The theatre department made history this Friday, Apr. 17 when the UIL ensemble became the first Cy Ranch team to advance to the regional competition in UIL One Act Play.

The ensemble’s play, Blue Stockings, is centered at Cambridge in 1896 and follows the journeys of the first women allowed to graduate from the university. The play’s namesake comes from the term “bluestockings,” a common derogatory term from the period given to women intellectuals. The play highlights the struggles and gains of the women’s suffrage movement, and the theatre department’s portrayal of this influential story earned them the top spot in the UIL competition.

Several Cy Ranch students earned awards at the competition. Senior Rebekah Stanley received the honor of Best Actress. Senior Blake Dalton was named Best Technician. Senior Amber Grant was selected as an All-Star Cast member, and senior Asia Krietz and junior Caleb Wyrick were named Honorable Mention All-Star Cast members.

The Region contest will be held at San Jacinto College on Saturday, Apr. 25.
