Mustangs Take Home Win Against Cy Lakes
The stakes were high heading into Thursday night’s game at Pridgeon Stadium. In their first district game of the year, our boys in blue were taking on a Cy Lakes team who had just come off their fourth win in program history. In this win, Lakes offense dominated Mayde Creek on their way to a 68-38 win. It seemed that the Spartans were going to finally turn it around this year and become a great match for the Mustangs.
Lakes won the toss, but decided to kick off to the potent Mustang offense. After a quick Mustang possession resulting in no score, Cy Lakes took over. The team managed to drive all the way to the Mustang’s 20 before being forced to settle for a field goal. Just like that, Lakes held a 3-0 lead.
On the ensuing kick off, Ranch junior Amaud Willis-Dalton managed to gas everyone on his way to an 85 yard touchdown run.
That was just a small spark, that lit a fire under the Mustang offense. They followed that touchdown with another one, this time a pass from senior Collin Rock to junior RJ Sneed. Lakes tried to stop the run, but to no avail as their next two possessions ended in a fumble and an interception by senior Nick Stiff.
The offense continued to pile on points with a touchdown run from junior Holden Gourley and another Rock to Sneed connection. Our Mustangs weren’t done yet, as they added another touchdown on a pass to junior Keric Wheatfall to give themselves a 35-3 lead into the half.
This lead at half was a great relief for the team as they only had a single touchdown lead heading into the locker room of a heated game against Cinco Ranch.
Coming out of the break, the Lakes offense was hungry to score again and prove their first game of the year was not a fluke. However, the Ranch defense was too strong and forced a punt out of Lakes. Senior Dylan Proske added on to the lead as he pushed over the goal line to give Ranch a 42-3 lead.
A 42-3 lead had pretty much guaranteed a win, allowing the coaching staff to give some players extra playing time. Senior Terrence Shaw was able to make the most of this opportunity and use his legs to gift the Mustangs another touchdown. The game continued to wind down, but our Mustangs weren’t done yet. They added a final score in the way of a Blake Lieberman field goal.
With the 52-3 win, the Mustangs move to 1-1 on the season and will prepare for the Homecoming game against Langham Creek on Saturday, Sept. 19th.
