Conspiracy theories are always fun to examine, if not for their absurdity alone. From secret celebrity reptiles to the Illuminati taking over the world, conspiracy theories have become an important part of pop culture. Whether you think they’re pointless or whether you’re a firm believer, people are always wondering if things are the way we think they are. Here are some of the more popular ones:

4. Shakespeare was not who we think he was

There is very little known about William Shakespeare. There is a lack of evidence that this man was actually a poet. It would have been very difficult – nearly impossible – for him to gain the wealth of knowledge he apparently had. The knowledge showcased in his plays would have only been acquired by royalty, and Shakespeare was merely the son of a glove-maker. He did not go to university and he could barely write.

There are no scriptures that are written in his handwriting except for signatures, and every signature he ever wrote were all written differently. There are theories that his plays were written by various authors or written by other playwrights such as Edward De Vere, Christopher Marlowe or Sir Francis Bacon. These men were more knowledgeable and it would have been very possible that one of them used Shakespeare as a way to hide their true identity.

3. MK Ultra

“MK Ultra” is the code name for a mind control experiment that went on from the 1950’s to the 60’s. During the Cold War, the US government feared that Chinese, Soviet and North Korean agents were using mind control to brainwash American prisoners of war in North Korea.

So, as the theory goes, the US government used more than 150 American citizens as test subjects. They used psychedelic drugs, paralytics and electroshock therapy to attempt to brainwash them. Some test subjects knew that they were participating in an experiment while some did not.

2. Secret celebrity reptiles

The theory goes like this: Everyone in our society that is famous and/or holds some kind of power like the royal family, the government and celebrities like Beyoncé and Justin Bieber are actually shape-shifting, mind-controlling reptiles. Sounds ludicrous, right?

Well, a 2013 survey showed that 12 million Americans support this theory. So, what is it about this far-fetched theory that Americans find so compelling? Maybe it’s the fact that video footage has been released with celebrities mysteriously changing their eye color into reptilian-like eyes and transforming into a trance-like state during the middle of an interview. Maybe it’s the magic of a stellar video editor, or maybe Beyoncé is secretly an alien in her spare time.

1. The moon landing was fake

In 1969, the United States’ Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. There are many, many people who believe this was a televised stunt (people still think Earth is flat); with many Americans tuning in to see the first humans to ever step foot on the moon. Conspiracy theorists believe that NASA could have played this all out because back in 1969, the US was very desperate to reach the moon before Russia.

These theories are based on photographs showing camera crosshairs behind rocks, suspicious wire lines appearing in the moon landing footage, shadows appearing in all different directions, the American flag swiftly moving as if there’s an AC vent nearby, no stars being present during the time of filming, NASA tampering with evidence and more.

Of course, no one knows what’s true and what’s conspiracy, but it sure is fun to wonder!
