National English Honor Society Inducts New Members

The Cypress Ranch chapter of National English Honor Society (NEHS) held its second annual induction ceremony on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, to commemorate its new members. The National English Honor Society continues to carry out its agenda of promoting both excellence and passion for English through its current members.

Now in its second year, NEHS introduced over sixty new members during the ceremony — drastically expanding their outreach and influence throughout the school.

The NEHS chapter at Cypress Ranch is a part of an international organization exclusive only to high school students participants who have achieved excellence in English. There are hundreds of chapters across the United Sates, and thousands of members. Founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta in 2004, NEHS has created several opportunities to high school students looking to expand their horizons in college and beyond.

The Cypress Ranch branch of NEHS was started last year under the direction of English teachers Mrs. Carbajal (Ms. Bailey) and Mr. Martinez, who have since promoted NEHS through their students. The society invites juniors and seniors, every year, to join. The application process is based on a student’s academic history, previous service projects, and involvement in extracurricular activities. NEHS has worked on several service projects including children’s book drives, writing letters to faculty and clothing drives. In addition, NEHS also holds film and book socials for its members on a monthly basis, in order to promote current literature.

“The purpose of NEHS is to celebrate literature in any form to help those in our community, and to expand our literary understanding,” President of NEHS, senior Gianna Ligotino says. “In doing so, we plan on participating in community service activities, studying literature as a collective, writing, and examining text in film.”

NEHS continues to live up to their motto — “gelast sceal mid are,” or “duty goes with honor.”
