Grace’s Top Five YouTube Creators of 2018

January 10, 2019

With the emergence of new concepts and ideas on YouTube throughout 2018, the platform has expanded beyond its previous outreach with the evolution of content. The now well-known “YouTube culture” has seen a variety of new creators jump on the platform — each with their own goal of creating content in their own way.

Here are my favorite YouTube creators of 2018:

Safiya Nygaard

Just this year, Safiya Nygaard’s channel has taken off after amassing over six million subscribers. Her channel is a mixture of beauty trends, fashion, and lifestyle videos featuring both her cat named Crusty and her boyfriend, Tyler Williams. Unlike other “beauty gurus” who have become popular in recent years, Nygaard’s content is original in that it offers a different perspective to current beauty fads. In addition, Safiya has become popular due the fact that she does not put on a false persona online. She presents herself to be a genuine person — increasing her connection to her audience.

Shane Dawson (Shane Lee Yaw)

Shane Dawson has been on YouTube for over a decade now, and he continues to prove himself to be a creator who is still able to evolve his channel to match his audience. With just under twenty million subscribers, Dawson’s channel has continued to grow, due in part to his new documentary series (featuring controversial celebrities such as Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau), life style experimentation, and conspiracy theory videos. In 2018, Dawson has demonstrated his ability to expound upon the formula of his previous videos. Dawson has grown as both a creator and a human being, and his audience has grown along with him.

Jenna Marbles (Jenna Mourey)

Like Dawson, Jenna Marbles’ channel has grown as a person and creator throughout her years posting online. Her content – once centered around comedy scripted skits – has developed into videos featuring her dogs: Kermit, Peach, and Marbles; and her boyfriend, Julian Solomita. Her legacy on YouTube remains as she drives home a strong connection with her audience by keeping them involved in her life not only on YouTube, but on her podcast with her boyfriend as well. Her audience is always craving more of her humorous personality.

Emma Chamberlain

At only seventeen years of age, Emma Chamberlain has made a name for herself as a content creator on YouTube this year by accumulating almost six million followers in 2018 alone. She offers a new style of content, as she is best known for her vlog and lifestyle videos. Her relatable persona appeals to a younger demographic. Although Chamberlain’s personality and content have helped her channel’s outreach, it’s her unique editing style that has attracted viewers. Chamberlain emphasizes certain aspects in her videos, and shows behind the scene footage which helps sustain her relationship with her subscribers.

Casey Neistat

Casey Neistat has brought out the vanity in many of us with his content on travel, and reviews on luxury experiences and items. He has become an original content creator with his style of shooting and editing, which is done using a wide range of film techniques (Neistat has a background in film). Neistat’s videos are appealing and interesting to watch. Now surpassing ten million subscribers, Neistat’s videos captivate viewers by giving them a taste of the extraordinary.
