January 8, 2019

From Marvel movies to epic romances, 2018 was a great year for the big screen. Here are my top movies of 2018:

Black Panther

With a booming 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Studios‘ “Black Panther” gained enormous amounts of excitement and appreciation from fans and viewers from around the world. The movie released in early 2018 and grossed a total of 1.334 billion dollars at the box office as of May 22. “Black Panther” also gained a rating of 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb and 88% on Metacritic.

“Black Panther” is one of the highest-grossing movies in the world. The movie has received several awards, such as the MTV Movie Award for Movie of the Year and the Teen’s Choice Award for Choice Movie: Sci-fi.

The movie focuses on T’Challa, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman, returning to Wakanda after his father’s death to assume his place on the throne as king. As he does so, Erik Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, challenges T’Challa’s place on the throne and stirs up a conflict that puts Wakanda at the risk of being revealed to the world; along with their incredible advances in technology. T’Challa’s true power and bravery are tested, but he rises victorious as the Black Panther.

Crazy Rich Asians

Based on “Crazy Rich Asians” written by Kevin Kwan, this drama/comedy/romance film was released in mid-August of 2018. “Crazy Rich Asians” grossed 238.6 million dollars at the box office. The film received a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.1 out of 10 rating on IMDb, and a 74% rating on Metacritic.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is considered to be the first major Hollywood film to have an all Asian cast in about 25 years, and the highest-grossing romantic-comedy in the United States. The film has received many awards as well as a nomination at the Golden Globes for actress Constance Wu for her portrayal of one of the main characters, Rachel Chu.

The movie follows the journey of New York professor, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), and her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding), as they travel to Singapore for a wedding. Chu soon finds out that her boyfriend, Nick, is a part of one of the wealthiest families in the world and one of the most desired bachelor’s in Singapore. Rachel struggles to escape every jealous woman pining for Nick, as well as to gain Nick’s mother’s approval of their relationship.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is the sequel to “Ant-Man” as well as the 8th movie in “phase three” of the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). The “Ant-Man” sequel has received a rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb, and 70% on Metacritic. The fantasy/sci-fi movie earned 622.7 million dollars at the box office.

The movie was released in early-July of 2018 and stars Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Evangeline Lily as Wasp, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” continues Scott Lang’s (Ant-Man) journey as he juggles heroism with fatherhood. Later on, Scott Lang must fight alongside the Wasp in order to defeat a new enemy.
