Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Big Boi to Perform at Superbowl Halftime Show
January 23, 2019
On Monday, January 14th, after months of speculation, the NFL confirmed the rumors — Maroon 5 would be headlining the Superbowl half-time show, which is set to take place in Atlanta, Georgia on February 3rd.
Travis Scott and Big Boi will be performing alongside Maroon 5. Fans have been excited for the performances, especially since Big Boi is an Atlanta-native. Big Boi, who is one-half of a rap duo named Outkast, tweeted a promotional video for the Superbowl half-time show on on Sunday.
“If hip-hop ever got its own “Rap Mount Rushmore,” Big Boi would definitely have a place on it as Atlanta’s “foremost wordsmith” and “funkiest gentleman,” the NFL says.
Travis Scott told PEOPLE magazine that he agreed to perform at the show under one very special condition: that the NFL will join him in raising money for a charity. They have decided to make a donation of $500,000 together to Dream Corps, a non-profit organization who champions social justice.
The Super Bowl half-time show is one of the biggest music performances in the world, with over 100 million people tuning in annually. Maroon 5 has received some backlash for being announced as next month’s performers. There have been people calling the NFL to cancel the performance because of their silence on some of their players not standing up when the US national anthem was played.
Since 2016, some NFL players have refused to stand up during the national anthem in a way to protest against the treatment of African American people in the U.S.. Because of this, the NFL announced their decision in May to fine teams with players who decided to not stand during the national anthem.
An online petition has been going around to persuade the NFL to rethink its decision on letting Maroon 5 perform. This petition has earned over 84,000 signatures.
In response to this controversy, Travis Scott tells PEOPLE, “I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in. I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change.”
Several other artists, such as Rihanna and Cardi B, have reportedly refused to perform at the half-time show.
