The 80’s Called, They Want Their Clothes Back

The phrase “history  repeats itself” seems to be true in more way than one this fashion season. With hot fashion trends rising back up from the iconic 1980-1989 time period, you might find yourself asking your mom if she can dig out her old blue jean overalls.

Clothing items such as “Mom jeans,” band t-shirts, and over-sized sweaters have made a valiant comeback. Platform shoes, like those made famous by The Spice Girls, and Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses such as those worn by Tom Cruise are now being placed back on the shelves for our generation to re-purpose.

“Anyone who has been in the fashion business for longer than five years,” Amy M. Spindler, former fashion critic off The New York Times, wrote, “might be feeling like a drowning man whose life is flashing before his eyes.”

Ask your mom and she will tell you, the denim-on-denim outfits and chunky jewelry she swore she would never ever wear again have crept back up and are making everyone fall back in love with them.

Clothing stores such as American Apparel and Urban Outfitters are famous for their 80’s vintage-inspired styles. Their hottest looks consist of the pastel colors, wacky patterns, and weird textures that were popular way back when. They have also added popular 80’s accessories like choker necklaces, aviator sunglasses, jellies shoes, and many more.

Parents are thrilled to see their trusty ole’ Keds tennis shoes being worn by their son or daughter, bringing back memories of 13 cent Coca Colas and Greased Lightning.

As much as the kids of this generation don’t want to admit, they are following in their parents’ fashion footsteps.

“Fashion is disposable yet repeats itself,” said Tom Ford, famous American designer and film director. “So just don’t throw away anything…”
