Young Mustang Squad Loses to Experienced Cy Fair

The Lady Mustangs (17-8, 5-2), led by Texas commit Deauzya Richards, took on a red-hot Cy Fair Bobcat (16-7, 6-1) squad this past Friday, Jan. 23 in a match-up between fourth and second in the district.

After getting off to a 0-2 start in district, the Mustangs have bounced back by winning five games straight. Cy Fair’s only district loss came at the hands of nationally-ranked Cy Woods. A win for the Mustang girls would mean a jump into third place and further solidify a possibility of a playoff spot.

The Mustangs came out and played tough in the first quarter. They ended it with a 16-13 lead and momentum heading into the second quarter. However, the Bobcats played some stingy defense in response to Ranch’s first quarter lead. Cy Fair was able to outscore the Mustangs 20-7 in the second and headed into the half with a 33-23 lead.

Fair picked up where they left off as senior Brynae Thompson and junior Angela Harris continued to shred the Ranch defense. They were able to outscore the Mustangs by 7 and ended the third with a 48-31 advantage. Ranch came out strong in the fourth, but it was too little too late for the Mustangs, as they were unable to retake the lead and fell to the Cy Fair Bobcats 59-51.

Both teams will remain in their second and fourth positions respectively.
