South By South West Takes Over Austin

The famous sixth street is swarming with people during SXSW 2012.

The annual South by South West (SXSW) music, film, and interactive festival is taking over the entire city of Austin, Texas this week. Actors, musicians, speakers, and directors from all over the world travel to Austin to perform, attend conferences, and speak at panels.

Originally, the festival was focused mainly on music and promoting local artists. However in 1994, film and interactive were added. Now with film, music, and interactive elements, it is estimated that 50,000 registrants attend.

This year, well-known artists such as Marina and The Diamonds, Childish Gambino, James Bay, Halsey, The Weekend, and many more are performing all over the city. Certain badges allow you access to these concerts and shows, however artists often have pop-up shows during the week where they will randomly perform for anyone.

Special film events are also being held at the festival. On Monday, Mar. 16, a restored version of The Breakfast Club and a Q&A with one of the main actors in the movie, Molly Ringwald, was hosted for lucky film lovers. Jimmy Kimmel will also be hosting his own show throughout the week with special guests such as the cast of The Walking Dead, Tony Romo, and Kevin Hart.

South by South West will be in action until Sunday, Mar. 22. It is such a great experience and allows you to truly understand why the city is known as “the music capital of the world.”
