Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer Finish Seasons
April 8, 2015
The two Mustang soccer teams’ playoff runs came to a conclusion this past Thursday, Apr. 2. Both the boys and girls made it two rounds deep, but both eventually lost by one goal. The girls lost a heart-breaker to Seven Lakes. Meanwhile, the boys team was unable to convert the many chances that they had against Sam Houston.
In the girls’ game, Cy Ranch and Seven Lakes were in a stalemate at the start. Not a single goal was scored in the first half, but the second half featured much of the opposite. Seven Lakes was the first team to score, putting themselves ahead one-to-nil. At some points, it seemed that the fans had lost hope as the Mustangs had yet to score a goal with just a few minutes remaining in the game.
The tide turned as junior Brianna Guerrero put one in the back of the net to even the score. All fans expected to see the two teams duke it out in an overtime period.
With just three seconds remaining, however, disaster struck. A Seven Lakes player shot the ball from nearly half field and the ball found its way over goalkeeper Alexis Warren’s outstretched hands. Seven Lakes’ score led to their 2-1 win and their advancement to the third round. This one mishap does not overshadow the excellent season from Warren and the Mustangs. Ranch ended the season with an astounding 13-7-2 record.
On the other hand, the boys were just unable to find the back of the net in their game. Sam Houston scored early on to put themselves ahead 1-0. No scoring was seen for the rest of the first and the second half. Our boys in blue created many opportunities to score, but each attempt ended badly.
This game was just the second boys’ soccer playoff game in Cy Ranch history in the first playoff run since the school was established in 2008. All of this was the result of a 9-4-6 record and a second place finish in 17-6A. The team narrowly finished behind foe Cy Springs who eventually won the district title.
It was a great season for both teams as they continue to improve their respective programs.
