Softball Finishes District Run Undefeated
This year’s softball team has achieved quite the feat—an undefeated district run, making them district champions for the first time in Cy Ranch’s history.
In an interview with the KUBE, junior pitcher Hannah Broseman expressed her excitement at the achievement.
“It’s something we’ve never done before,” she said. “It’s something that we always shot for. This year we are actually doing it.”
Softball coach Kristin Mueller added, “Going into it, [winning district] was one of our biggest goals; to finish off district champs. [We] were not expecting to be undefeated, but it’s been a huge accomplishment.”
That district run coupled with their non-district schedule earned them a 22-4 record heading into the game against Benjamin Davis on Friday, May 1.
The team went into the game against Davis coming off a thrilling win against rival Cy Woods, in which the team won in the final frame. Junior Sophia Godnich scored in the bottom of the seventh after tagging up at second on a fly ball to right, giving them a 2-1 win.
After the win against Woods, the team received Allegiance Bank’s Team of the Week for their great conclusion to a terrific season. In addition, senior Lauren Becker was awarded Xfinity Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Their first round opponent, Davis, held a decent record, but had barely escaped their district by earning fourth place. This meant that our Mustangs were heavy favorites as they stepped onto the dirt. As the team walked onto the diamond, they were met with loud cheers from fellow classmates.
To start off the game, the Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the first and then added five more in the second. Starter Hannah Broseman was then pulled in favor of sophomore Ashley Koncir. Koncir continued the shutout started by Broseman, and Alysaa Bazan pitched the final frame en route to the 13-0 win over Benjamin Davis.
With the win, Broseman improved to 13-0 on the season and the team moved onto the second round.
The second round featured the Mustangs facing off against the Mayde Creek Rams in a three-game series. Our Mustangs won the first leg at Mayde Creek by a score of 9-6 and got the chance to close the series out at home this past Friday, May 8.
On Friday, May 8, the girls lost 2-1, forcing them to play a third and deciding game 30 minutes after the second. This meant that the senior girls would be forced to miss prom. They responded well with a 16-2 trashing of Mayde Creek to send the team into the third round.
Girls softball will now face Seven Lakes with game one taking place this Thursday, May 14 at 6 P.M. at Ranch. Game two will be at 6 P.M. on Friday, May 15 at Seven Lakes, with game three being played thirty minutes after if necessary.
