Classics Say Goodbye to Seniors, Coach Buchner

As the year comes close to an end, it was time for the Classics to put on their annual Spring Show. The show took place from Friday, May 1 to Saturday, May 2. Coached by the Cypress Ranch dance teacher Betty Buchner, the Classics spent months rehearsing and practicing for this one event.

“I loved getting to see the Classics perform and seeing their hard work pay off,” sophomore Lauren Petriccione said.

Different performances throughout the night ranged from full team dances to solos and duets. Some dance numbers were performed by exclusively upperclassmen, while others consisted of just the future Classics, called “Classies.”

The show’s dancers weren’t exclusive to current or future members of the team, however. At one point, the senior Classics’ fathers were welcomed on stage to dance with their daughters, creating a heartfelt moment in the midst of an impressive show.

“My favorite part of the night was watching the senior girls dance with their dads on stage,” senior Kelli Mosher said. “Many of my closest friends are Classics so it was very emotional for me to watch them dance with their dads as they ended this chapter of their lives.”

The Spring Show is always seen as a special event, considering it is one of the last times the senior dancers will perform in high school. However, as these Classics prepared to say their final goodbyes to the team, they also celebrated the retirement of Coach Betty Buchner.

“I’m going to miss Ms. Buchner,” Petriccione said. “She was my dance teacher and my Teen Leadership teacher, so I learned a lot from her both inside and outside of dance.”

Buchner has been the Classics coach since Cy Ranch opened in 2008, but she said she feels like she has been coaching for a million years.

“My favorite part about being the Drill Team coach is being able to get 81 girls to be focused and able to work together, and the creativity of [dance],” Buchner said.

Starting with only 16 girls in the program, Buchner has coached these girls on and off the stage.

“She has impacted many lives and will leave nothing behind but great things,” Petriccione said.

The 2015 Spring Show was a sentimental one as the Classics sent off their senior teammates and coach, but it wasn’t all tears. The girls are all very excited to perform together as a new team next year and usher in a new era of dance.
