Ed Sheeran Wows at Houston Concert

Another unforgettable night was created in the name of music when British artist Ed Sheeran traveled across the pond to the Toyota Center in Houston on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The night started out on a good note as the wonderful opening acts, Jamie Lawson and Christina Perri, took the stage.

Soon after the openers finished their sets, the British singer hit the stage with just his bright orange hair, casual cargo shorts, guitar and loop pedal. He opened the show with one of his most popular and heartfelt songs, “Give Me Love.” This song is a love ballad full of strong background vocals, strongly heard by the use of his loop pedal, and set an intense feel for the rest of the night.

During live performances, Sheeran uses a tool known as a loop pedal. The loop pedal allows for certain sounds made by a voice or instrument to be instantly recorded and then looped back over again, while layering new sounds on top. Sheeran is one of the few artists who performs with this instrument, which allows for him to create a unique sound that is not heard in studio versions of songs.

“The fact that the only thing on stage with him was his guitar and loop pedal was phenomenal,” said concert-goer Agnes Budjijanto. “It’s pure, raw talent.”

After performing some of his most popular songs off of his new album, Multiply, Sheeran wowed the crowd with his famous mashups. Creatively remixing songs, such as “Feeling Good” by Michael Buble, Sheeran flowed right into his own folk song “I See Fire,” while making the audience go wild. He continued to do that throughout his set, matching “No Diggity”  by Blackstreet with his single “Don’t.” These remixes created a fun twist to the normal songs while showing off Sheeran in all of his musical talent.

The night was full of surprises once Christina Perri joined Sheeran on the stage where they performed Perri’s new song “Be My Forever,” which features Sheeran. He also debuted his new song, “Dark Times,” a song he produced with The Weeknd.

Toward the end of the show he threw in one of his most sentimental songs “Small Bump,” a heart-wrenching song about a close friend’s miscarriage. Sheeran hadn’t performed the song in a while, so it was a sweet surprise when the first chords softly began playing from the stage.

“I stopped singing this, I don’t know why,” Sheeran said of the song. “If you’re one of my real fans you’ll know this song.” And with that, the stadium became instantly silent as Sheeran strummed on his guitar to create one of the most special moments of the night.

“Ed is one of the most talented musicians in the industry,” said another concert-goer, Emilee Clyburn. “I am so lucky to have seen him live and so close up.”

So thank you, Mr. Ed Sheeran, for touching the hearts of many through your lyrics and for putting on yet another incredible live show.
