Football Reigns Victorious in Homecoming Game
It was an amazing night this past Friday, Sept. 18 at the Berry Center as our Mustangs took on the Langham Creek Lobos in the much-anticipated Homecoming game. It was Homecoming weekend for both schools, resulting in a sellout of the Berry Center and crowds packing the stadium.
If that wasn’t enough fuel, our ‘Stangs lost last year’s matchup on a hail Mary touchdown at the end of the game. This was the only district loss for the Mustangs, while Langham didn’t drop a game in district play.
Coming into it, the two teams were headed in different directions. Langham came in right after losing by a FG to Cy Falls, while our Mustangs had just come off a 52-3 thrashing of Cy Lakes. Langham was hungry for the first win of their young season and our Mustangs were looking to get on a winning streak.
The Lobos received the opening kick-off and their offense promptly came onto the field. Their stay was not too long though as the defense picked off Paul Watson’s pass deep in Cy Ranch’s territory. Ranch made use of that turnover and was able to drive into field goal range and have junior Dominick White nail a 44-yard field goal.
Ranch continued to add to their lead as senior Ty Laurent ran one from 14 yards out with 4 minutes left in the third. Our Mustangs did not stop there as the third quarter saw Collin Rock run one in, junior Gourley catch a pass from Rock and run one in, and White adding another field goal to make it 27-0.
This was totally unexpected, as the past games between these teams had been nail biters until the end. Langham’s crowd looked deflated as they had began to lose faith in their team. The Cy Ranch side of the stands saw people jumping up and down, with some even leaving prematurely because they knew the fate of the game.
Langham tried their hardest and earned themselves 14 points and almost looked like they could make a comeback after recovering an onside kick. Senior Mark Bruno ended the threat after making an incredible diving interception in the end zone. This was his second interception of the night and the fourth overall for the defense.
A 27-14 win gave our Mustangs a 2-0 district record and they will prepare to take on Cy Woods in an annual rivalry game on Saturday, Sept. 26.
