Volleyball’s Frantic Finish Earns Playoff Qualification
Almost a year replaced from being state quarter-finalists and our Mustangs went into the game on Sept. 11 with a record of 0-4 and sat in last place in CFISD. It would be an understatement to say everyone was surprised that this team had fallen so greatly from the top of ladder. This win-less record was paired with 12 set losses and only four set wins, and key losses such as Baylor star Shelly Fanning definitely didn’t help the team.
Our lady Mustangs began to turn it around in their fifth game of the year, considerably the turning point of their district season. They went to Cy Ridge’s gymnasium and showed off some of the talent that got them into the playoffs the year prior. Our girls did not drop a single set on their way to a 3-0 win.
This win sparked the start of a long winning streak for our girls. They went on to defeat Jersey Village, Cy Creek, Cy Lakes, and Cy Springs without dropping a single set to improve their record to 5-4. With this record, our Mustangs were back in the playoff hunt.
Then came a test for our ladies. They had to face the top four teams in the district in four straight games. The team lost 3-1 to Langham and then dropped another to eventual district champion Cy Falls 3-2. They split the final two games with a win against Cy Fair and a loss to rival Cy Woods.
At this point, the odds of the Mustang volleyball team making it to playoffs seemed low. Everyone was stunned as our girls sat far outside of the playoff race. District rival Cy Woods was in fourth with an 8-5 record while our ladies’ record was 6-7.
This, however, did not discourage our Mustangs. They practiced harder, played better and got themselves on a winning streak. In fact, this streak went all the way to the final night of district play. We (10-7) would be playing a struggling Cy Springs team while Cy Woods (10-7) had to take on powerhouse Cy Fair.
Our ladies played their hearts out on Tuesday, Oct. 27 and earned a 3-0 sweep against Springs while Cy Woods dropped their final game of the season, meaning our volleyball team would be headed to playoffs yet again.
They will play Memorial on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the Don Coleman Coliseum. Tickets will be on sale at lunches and at the door.
