Football Wins First Round of Playoffs

Kyle Roemlein, Writer

Our 9-1 Mustangs took the field this past Friday night for the beginning of their defense of their state runner-up status. They took on the Memorial Mustangs who were coming off a 51-0 win that ended their regular season on a high note.

It was close for all of the first quarter, but our boys in blue proved that they were a force to be reckoned with as they took the opening round of the playoffs with a 44-13 win.

The key to this win was our Mustangs’ defense forcing turnovers, giving the offense a consistently short field which they capitalized on. Senior Colllin Rock tossed two touchdowns and junior E.J. Thompson led the rushing attack with 120 yards on 7.1 yards.

Again, the celebration will be great as the team was able to guarantee themselves one more week of football. These celebrations will be quick though, as the team will be taking on the state powerhouse Katy Tigers next.

Katy has been having a season for the ages this year. They have only allowed 18 points over the entire season while scoring 546 points against their opponents. That means this team on average is winning their games by a score of about 49-2.

A key to taking a game off of this spectacular Katy team will be winning the turnover battle. Both teams are great at not giving up the ball, as Katy has just nine and our Mustangs eight turnovers so far. However, our defense has proven to be one of the best in the state in forcing turnovers as our boys have 32 on the year.

If our defense is able to continue to make plays and our offense continues to dominate, it should be interesting to see if our Mustangs will be able to pull of the upset.

This contest against Katy will take place this Friday, Nov. 20 at Tully Stadium. Buy tickets at lunch or online at cy-fairtix.com to support the Mustangs.
