Basketball Wins First Tournament of the Year
December 8, 2015
Our varsity basketball team had their best season in program history this past year. The team was able to make the playoffs for the first time ever and was even able to win their first round game.
This year, the team hopes to reach new heights with three returning starters and a plethora of talent at every position. The team’s skills earned them a number 24 ranking in Houston’s Vype pre-season rankings.
During this season, the team garnered a lot of hype, and all of it was well deserved. Our boys opened the season against the same opponent as always: a tough, no. 10 ranked Cinco Ranch. An exciting game saw the two teams duke it out as the game went into overtime and saw our Mustangs win 73-65 with the help of senior Miles Simms (29 pts, 4 stls) and junior Blake Nevins (18 pts, 14 rebs).
A great start to the season heightened the already huge expectations of this star-studded team.
This past weekend saw the team compete in their first tournament of the year, the Don Coleman classic. It held a mix of CFISD teams and teams coming from across the greater Houston area. Our boys in blue opened the tournament by winning both of their pool play games by sizable margins.
Those wins set them up for a match-up against district foe Cy Falls. This would give fans an insider look of the competition that would be seen in the upcoming 17-6A season.
The Eagles were able to hang with the Mustangs for one quarter. After that, the Mustangs built a 12 point lead at halftime and didn’t look back on their way to a 65-53 win. This win set the Mustangs up for a chance to play in the championship game of the tournament.
They would be meeting up with the Klein Bearkats in a tough showdown. Our boys were able to pull through one last time and top Klein 43-41, earning the Don Coleman Classic trophy. Achievements didn’t stop there as Simms earned the title of tournament MVP, while teammates senior Elish Benjamin and junior Michael Tate played themselves onto the All-Tournament Team.
Our Mustangs will prepare for a non-district bout against College Park on Friday, Dec. 8 which will be followed by the Cy Hoops Invitational on Thursday, Dec. 10.
