“Shrek” Is Not Your Ordinary Fairy Tale

The Cypress Ranch Theatre had their audiences in stitches during their performances of “Shrek: The Musical”. Senior Cameron Bishop, the title character, blew us away with slightly crude, but nevertheless family friendly humor. The show was pushed over the top with the aid of sophomore Joshua Edwards as the annoying, yet lovable, Donkey. This dynamic duo takes on the typical quest for any knight in shining armor and his noble steed, with a few twists along the way.

The cowardly Lord Farquaad, played by Alec Quintero, declares the only way for Shrek to reclaim possession of his swamp (Farquaad banished all the odd fairy tale creatures such as Pinocchio, the Wicked Witch, and the Three Little Pigs to his swamp) is to rescue a fair maiden. The lord’s small stature, an illusion aided by Quintero’s incredible coordination, pushed him to overcompensate by abusing his power. In order to become king and gain more power, he needed to marry a princess. So the challenge of rescuing the fabled Princess Fiona that is guarded by lava and a dragon was conceived.

Fiona, the dazzling damsel in distress, was played by junior Rebekah Stanley. Stanley starred in last year’s performance of Legally Blonde as Elle Woods and it appears she hasn’t lost her talent. She brought her same bubbly energy to the role of the optimistic princess.

Another impressive supporting role was senior, Kaitlyn Knippers, as the Dragon. Her strong voice added some soul to the show.

Everyone involved with the musical should be proud of the outstanding production they put together. It was clear from the harmony displayed on stage that many hours must have gone into the direction and rehearsal of the show.
