On Feb. 4, the annual CFISD Livestock Show and Sale broke records at the CFISD Exhibit Center. Cy Ranch students were well-represented as they showcased the animals they raised, and the show raised a total of $502,250 through sales.

Forty percent of Cy Ranch students made a sale this year, the highest in the district. Cy Ranch FFA won best in show in goat, horticulture, and rabbits, breaking previous records in sales for all of these three fields.

Gregory Sobotik was named Grand Champion for his goat, which was bought by Joe Myers Ford for $16,000, eclipsing the previous record of $12,500. Ryan John was also named Grand Champion for his rabbits, which sold for $16,500 to Jarrar & Company Services, breaking the previous record of $9,000. In addition, Meghan Sirmans was awarded Grand Champion of Horticulture.

Three students were also named Reserve Champions. Daniel Fitchel won in Ag Mechanics, and Ellisyn Burroughs won in Swine Showmanship.  Jessica Johns was named Reserve Champion in Market Rabbits, which she sold to PBK Architects for $4,500.

“I worked very hard to get my table done,” said Fitchel. “We all did good at the show, and I’m proud of the work I did for my project.”

Last but not least, Caleb Abercrombie was named Mr. Show Teen, earning $400 to be put toward his next project.

For many, these wins are the end of a long journey.

“We raised our animals for about five months,” said senior Morgan Combes, who showcased her animal at the sale. “It was very hard giving them up, but I’m proud of what I did.”

The Livestock show was a very fun experience and a step into the path into a career of Agriculture for these students.

“The show is an opportunity,” said Agriculture teacher T.J. Palisin. “It’s a learning experience for the kids and it teaches them about the inner workings of auctions. It’s something you can’t teach.”
