Hello Dolly!: Tony-worthy Student Production

On Thurs., Nov. 10, through Sun., Nov. 13, the Cypress Ranch Theatre department presented their musical for the year, “Hello Dolly.” As expected, “Hello Dolly” was another showstopping production from the Mustangs. The musical was a love song on the whimsical side for attendees, similar to last year’s peppy performance of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which received eleven nominations in the Tommy Tune awards. With “Hello Dolly” being praised as the logical evolution of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” it is very possible that the Theatre department will be receiving additional praise.

“I think we have a really good chance of winning a Tommy Tune award,” junior Charlynn Hanes said. “Most schools that win are magnate schools, but we put on a pretty good show with ‘Hello Dolly’.”

The musical “Hello Dolly” follows the life of Dolly Levi, a charismatic matchmaker who has the task of finding love for the enigmatic and mysterious Horace Vandergelder. However, Dolly later determines that she loves Horace.

Dolly was played masterfully by senior Abby Weeks, who knew the ins and outs of Dolly’s difficult character and hit the nail on the head in representing the rather polarizing personality of Dolly.

“Abby is a really good actor and she really gave the character justice,” Weeks’ costar, senior Ross Strickland said. “The show would have suffered if we did not have Abby as she was our lead. She really led.”

Speaking with those who attended the musical, people shared that they were enthralled with the wonder and whimsy that “Hello Dolly” seemed to emanate from its core. Nobody seemed to be able to explain their source of bewitchment between the production and their minds, only able to tell me how wonderful the acting, production, and the effort that went into the show turned out.

The Cypress Ranch theatre department never fails to impress and “Hello Dolly” flew past that mark with its intricate plot lines, poise and confidence that is always expected from the Mustang Theatre students.
