The Cypress Ranch Wrestling Team is taking trophies and is having one of their best seasons to date. Since this season has started, the Mustang Wrestling team has placed high in several tournaments.

Wrestlers Kayla Fitts and Jarod Camacho placed first at the CFISD Invitational, in the girls 110 pound class, and the boys 113 pound class, respectively.

As the season goes on, Mustang Wrestling continues to train for state competition.

Both wrestlers trained heavily this year in preparation for the CFISD Invitational. This is Fitts’ first competitive season, and for her to win at this tournament means a lot to her.

“It’s always awesome to try something new and give it a chance,” senior Kayla Fitts says. “I worked hard everyday, and I really feel like I achieved something.”

Junior Dylan Nowak, currently on the JV Wrestling team here at Cypress Ranch, was happy to sit down for a Q&A:

How has the season been so far?

“The season has been going good from a team standpoint. Our team has grown a lot stronger and we’ve come very far. So far, we’ve won awards for both boys and girls wrestling. I think that qualifies as a good season.”

What are some goals the team has for this season?

“We have to set our own individual goals for the year, but as a team we want to win it all. We want all of our wrestlers to make it to district, and if that goes well, state.”

What are you planning on this season?

“My goals are to have a higher win ratio than last year, as well as work on my technique and skill.”

How has the team been practicing so far?

The team works after school, everyday, for about 2 hours. Most of our work is conditioning and improving technique, and we occasionally do some live sparring as well.

How have your coaches been during practice?

The coaches make sure that we work as hard as we can without breaking. Although we get to have fun, the coaches are always making sure that we’re performing at the highest possible level.

What is the team dynamic like?

We’re a family. Our motto for the program is “strength through family.” We chose that because we stick together through every turn. We care about one another and we protect our teammates, and that’s the core of the program.
