After starting the season 1-2 the Mustangs produced an unexpected six-game winning streak, which earned the team a 16-6A district champion title Oct. 31 after toppling Bridgeland 23-14.
One of the district’s most promising teams this year is the Cypress Ranch Mustangs. They started the season with rough back-to-back losses, then flipped the switch to create a win streak that was needed and are looking to continue the success. Some players were able to give some insight on what caused this positive change.
“I think when we went to the bye week, we really focused and locked in and bought into what the coaches were saying, and we started playing for each other as a team,” junior Jacob Lee said.
Lee says his motivation to play each week comes from striving to be his best self.
“After the first couple losses of the season, we went over to a teammate’s house and we just had a team meeting and really talked about what we needed to improve and came to practice with a different mindset,” junior Caleb Clack said.
Clack said his motivation comes from wanting to make his parents proud.
“They give everything to me, so I work hard for them,” he said.
It is clear these Mustangs believe in team bonding and are creating a true brotherhood.
Junior John Fox gave very good insight on what could possibly be the true reason for the unexpected switch.
“I think at the beginning of the season, we were just trying to find ourselves,” Fox said. “We were a new team since a lot of seniors left last year. We had to build our chemistry. Everyone had to learn their assignments and not just play for themselves and play for the team. So like now, as we’re playing as a team, obviously you see wins when you play as a team versus individuals.”
Fox said his motivation comes from his “why,” and he wants to make his mom proud. He also plays with the goal of getting a college scholarship.
“We plan[ned] on beating Bridgeland just by, as I said last, just playing as a team and just sticking to your keys and sticking to your assignments. Everyone does their job, [and] we win the game,” Fox said.
It is clear that this Mustang team has the right mindset and truly knows what it means to play as a team and for each other.
If the Mustangs keep the positive mindset and work hard during practice, the team believes they could have a good run in the playoffs.
